Shivendra
Kishor
Senior Director of Fraud, Abuse Identity & Reconciliation
Shivendra’s journey to being a Decision Maker is marked by an insatiable curiosity and a knack for understanding complex systems. “I was on the verge of becoming a software engineer, but became fascinated with how fraud and abuse were working,” he recounts, tracing his path from a computer science graduate to his current role at Instacart.
Shivendra has always been driven to protect and enhance user experiences. His career trajectory, spanning roles from a Fraud Analyst to senior positions at eBay and Lyft, reflects a deepening engagement with the challenges of online fraud.
Yet amidst the upheaval of a global pandemic, Shivendra’s career and personal passions found a poignant intersection as he took solace in his newfound hobby of cooking and baking.
"During the pandemic, Instacart was a lifeline for me, not just for essentials, but as a gateway to explore my love of cooking and baking,” he recalls.
Instacart exists to make life easier – busy people get more time to spend with family, which is how I was utilizing it, too.
The parallels between Shivendra’s personal and professional responsibilities are clear and compelling. Each enriches the other, creating a holistic approach to his life and his work at Instacart – seamlessly weaving the lessons of focus, strategy and creativity into the fabric of his day-to-day life.
After a day of fulfilling work, Shivendra often enjoys playing badminton with friends. Unlike solo activities like hiking or climbing, he says, badminton relies on the input of others — and having a strategic opponent is half the fun.
“Playing doubles in badminton is about understanding the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent,” he adds. “And then, it’s about partnering with your teammate to ensure you can use each other’s strengths to secure a win.”
And the lessons extend beyond the court or the kitchen. Leadership, for Shivendra, is as much about fostering teamwork, creativity and collaboration as it is about strategic insight.
In the heart of Instacart’s operations lies a mission transcending simple grocery delivery; it’s about enriching lives by saving time for what truly matters. This mission drives their innovative approach to every challenge, including fraud prevention.
Shivendra, reflecting on the company’s shift toward more efficient fraud management, highlighted the necessity for a change. “When looking at fraud solutions, it was really about automation and scalability. We had hundreds of agents manually reviewing orders and were missing all of the network data we now get from Forter.”
Driven by this mission, with a desire to reduce manual interventions and leverage data more effectively, Instacart sought a partner to help minimize fraud while enhancing customer experience.
"It helped us shift away from manual labor," Shivendra explains, underscoring the impact of automation on freeing up resources for more customer-centric tasks.
Within their organizations, decision makers are the audacious ones. Unconcerned with the status quo, they make moves designed to free themselves — and their teams — from the stress of fraud prevention.
With Forter, decision makers get guaranteed results so they can focus their time and energy on strategic opportunities that have a bigger impact on their organizations.

MAKING CONNECTIONS
As a leader, it’s important to assess how to support your partners and play like a team – which I’ve found is important on the court and in tackling fraud.
The customer’s pain points take so much longer to solve without a partner like Forter, and there would have been a higher fraud loss if we stayed with the manual processes.
BEING A DECISION MAKER
This realization deepend his appreciation for Instacart's mission to "create a world where everyone has access to the food they love and more time to enjoy it together." And as Shivendra dove further into his culinary experiments, from simple banana bread to elaborate birthday cakes and mastering the art of tikka masala, an opportunity at Instacart presented itself.
Seizing the chance, Shivendra saw a way to merge his newfound love of cooking with his career. “When the opportunity arose, I was incredibly excited,” Shivendra recounts.
